The Meat Riots

A march of tens of thousands took to the capital against artificially high prices for meat. They marched to the Presidential Palace, and when the President failed to appear, apparently on a trip to the country, they attacked businesses and banks. The police moved in, and the crowd attempted to seize the palace. Failing that, they remained in the streets for nearly a week, by which time the police had fired on the crowds. Up to two hundred fifty people were killed.
