1976 One out of every 500 of Uruguay's three million people is said to be a political prisoner. Over 25,000 are tortured. On July 4th, 24 Uruguayan and Chilean political refugees that appear on CIA documents are kidnapped and tortured by intelligence officers from Chile and Uruguay, as part of the Operation Condor", defined by the U.S. Department of defense as "Code given to persecution of left wing, communists and Marxists in the Southern Cone."
