Eloy Alfaro

The Radical Liberals overthrow the longtime Conservative regime.

Their name "Radical" reflects the 19th Century use of the term as anti-clerical, and they immediately set about legalizing divorce, respecting freedom of religion and divorcing the Ecuadorian state from the Catholic Church. They are led by caudillo Eloy Alfaro who becomes president until 1901.
