A Virtual Protectorate

Washington imposes the Infamous Platt amendment on the Republic of cuba as a condition for withdrawal of U.S. military forces that had occupied the island since the so-called Spanish American War (1898). As a result, Cuba becomes a virtual protectorate. The amendment also appropriates part of Guantanamo Bay, where a U.S. Naval base is established.
