On May 1, Peron calls the Montoneros "immature imbeciles," whereupon they turn their backs on him and leave the Plaza de Mayo half empty. Peron dies on June I and lsabelita assumes the presidency, while Lopez Rega governs from behind the throne. The Triple A (Argentine Anti-Communist Alliance) begins to take action, kidnapping and assassinating intellectuals and politicians suspected of links to the guerrillas. In September, the Montoneros announce they are going back underground. The ERP opens a rural guerrilla front in the northern province of Tucuman.
